TURKEY HILL MIDDLE SCHOOL

Ms. Mary Cringan, Principal 582-4110

June 1999

DRESS CODE
It is very important that students come to school wearing appropriate
clothing.  As the warmer weather approaches, students and parents must
remember that the school environment is a place where learning must take
place.  Tank tops, tube tops, spaghetti strap tops, short tops that show the
stomach, and bathing suits worn under a lace top are not acceptable.
Students wearing clothing that is determined by the administration to be
distracting to the learning environment will be asked to have a change of
clothing brought to school.

BICYCLE RIDERS
Now that the warmer weather has arrived, many students will want to ride
their bicycles to school.  It is extremely important that parents discuss
with their child(ren) personal safety, the rules of the road, and the
responsibility of riding a bicycle.  The roads around the school and the
parking lot are very busy during the morning hours and afternoon dismissal.

We have thirteen buses and sixty staff members entering the parking lot as
well as over one hundred automobiles transporting students.  Safety is my
number one priority and I am asking parents to carefully weigh the decision
of having their child(ren) ride their bicycles to school.  Remember that it
is a Massachusetts State Law that children must wear helmets when riding a
bicycle.

LUNCH MONEY REMINDER
If a child does not have money for lunch, they can ask in the cafeteria for a
lunch ticket, which is used to purchase a hot lunch only.  We expect students
to pay back this loan the next day.  Unfortunately, many students are not
paying back the amount they borrowed in a timely manner.  We expect all
outstanding debts to be paid before allowing a student another lunch money
loan.  Please ask your children if they owe any money to the cafeteria.

FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE

Sports Physicals - Any eighth grader intending to play Lunenburg High School
sports must provide an updated yearly physical in order to play.  Your
primary care physician should do sports physicals.  A limited number of
school physicals will be available.  Students intending to play Fall sports
must have physicals done prior to the first day of Fall practice.  See our
school nurse for further information.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS

The North Central Special Olympics were held this year at Gardner High
School.  Five students representing THMS won medals and ribbons in their
events.

It was a great day and we are very proud of our school athletes!

FROM THE OFFICE

Report Cards
Final report cards will be mailed to each student during the last week of
June.  All books, materials, and library books must be returned before report
cards are mailed.  If the books have been lost or destroyed, payment must be
received for each book.

Moving
If you are planning on moving over the summer, please notify the school
office with your new address.  We mail August newsletters and we want to be
sure that you receive them prior to the start of school.

Withdrawals
If your child is not attending THMS for the 1999-2000 school year, please
stop by the office and sign a release of records form.  It is very important
that we have an accurate count of enrolled students.

Summer Office Hours
The school office will be open Monday-Friday from 8:00-2:00.  Please call the
school if you are planning to pick up or deliver any items.

FROM THE GUIDANCE OFFICE

Attention Grade 7 Students and Parents
Iowa Test of Basic Skills - Results will be mailed home with students before
the close of school.  This test measures achievement in the areas of Math,
Reading, and Writing.  Results can be used to identify student's strengths
and weaknesses.  This will help you as students and parents to discuss and
address any areas of need.  Results, along with other information about your
child, may also be useful in supporting placement in academic classes and/or
tutorial activities.

Please feel free to contact our Guidance Counselor, should you have any
questions regarding your child's progress.

SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL
THMS will have two parent openings for the School Advisory Council.  Please
submit a letter to Principal Mary Cringan by June 11, 1999.  The information
in your letter should include: your name, age of children, and reason why you
would like to be elected for this two-year position.  The PTO will hold the
election during the Open House nights in September.

PAC/SAL

At this time, I would like to thank the entire school community for their
support of PAC/SAL and our activities over the past three years that I have
been a chairperson.  We have made great strides in educational opportunities
for ALL children in the Lunenburg Public Schools.  I would also like to thank
Dr. Richard Carlson, Loxi Calmes and the building administrators for their
support.  It is my hope and belief that we have come a long way, but we still
have a ways to go.  I pledge my support for the new chairperson who will be
stepping forward.  It is my hope that you will give this person the same
support and encouragement that I have received from everyone.  Carol Demont

FUNNY THINGS HAPPEN WHEN YOU READ!

That's the state library slogan and it definitely describes the summer
program at the Ritter.  Here are a few highlights: Book Bingo is the way to
win prizes by reading (Hate to read? We'll take that as a challenge!)
Gamaches Cyclery has donated a terrific hybrid mountain bike for our raffle,
we're having a Kareoke Night, open-mike performances with great food, movies,
weekly art/craft sessions, mountain bike expeditions, and we're bringing in a
Hummer for an up close and personal, thanks to Gold Star Limo!!

Anyone 12 or older watch out for audition dates for The Baseball Show, a
two-act play to be performed both in Cushing Auditorium and at Fitchburg
State College during Americulture.  All of you 8th graders listen up.  We're
offering high school students (that's you) a chance to win tickets to see
Blue Man Group!!  Bemis Associates is our funding Fairy Godmother!  Also, you
may recall that freshmen are required to give a 5-minute speech - eeeeeee!
BIG FEAR #1.  We've got some pros from Toastmasters willing to prove that
anybody can conquer that demon.  The complete schedule will be sent out soon.

Any questions? Call the Ritter @ 582-4140.

SHOWTIME FOLKS!
If you missed "Murder You Must Be Kidding" the fabulous debut of Lunenburg's
Teen Summer Theater, do not be left out this year!  We are reviewing scripts
and looking for ADULTS who can help with the various details of theater
production.  Do not be scared off if you have no experience.  There are lots
of little but essential jobs and it's fun being part of a successful show!

WE HOPE EVERYONE HAS A SAFE,

FUN, AND RESTFUL SUMMER VACATION!
