Medication Policy Reminder

A reminder concerning medications:  Any medication (over the counter or
prescription) taken at school must be administered by the school nurse.  All
medications require written parental consent and a doctorıs order.  Students
are not allowed to carry any medication in school - except for emergency
medications such as inhalers or Epi-pens.
All medications must be brought directly to the school nurse.  Please do
not give medication to your son/daughter to take on their own in school.
This is against state law and school policy.  Please call the school nurse
if you have any questions concerning medication or the schoolıs medication
policy.

Annual Postural Screening:  Grade 9

Massachusetts students in grade 5 through 9 are screened annually for
postural defects. At LHS, the students are screened during gym classes in
March and April by the school nurse.
The screening takes just a few minutes. The purpose of the screening is to
detect early signs of possible posture problems. This is not a diagnostic
service but a program to identify young people who should have further
medical evaluations.
If your child should have any significant findings, you will be notified
and asked to take your child to the doctor. The majority of students have no
problems.
If your child has already been screened by your doctor, or is being
followed by a physician for scoliosis, or you prefer to have your own doctor
perform this exam, please send a note from the physician to the school nurse
indicating the screening has been done.
Call the school nurse (582-4115) if you have any questions.

To:  Parents/Guardians of Juniors:
From:  Ms Whalley

Please join me on April 12th at 7:00 pm in the LHS Library to learn the
college application process and ask questions in an informal setting.  This
will be one of two meetings  this year about post-secondary planning.  The
second meeting will be held in May.
I also think an individual meeting with parents and students can be
fruitful at this point in the planning process. Please call the Guidance
Office today, or send in a note with your child to set up a time for us to
meet and discuss which colleges you may wish to research.
Spring is a great time to visit campuses, and much less stressful now
than it will be in the fall.  For students not continuing their education
immediately after high school, letıs meet and define how your child can make
sure-footed plans for the future.  I would like to meet with each of you, so
letıs start early!

SAT Facts & Deadlines

SAT's are required if you are attending a four year school after high
school.

SAT I is given in May and June.
SAT II is given in May and June.

The SAT II is a one hour subject test.  A maximum of three tests can be
taken in one day.  Tests should be taken if they are required  by
prospective colleges.

SAT I and SAT II cannot be taken on the same day.

Juniors should take a subject test in June if they are applying to private
schools that require them and:
      1) finished a course and wonıt be continuing it in the senior year and
       2) they did well in a subject area.
Example: Chemistry, Biotechnology or Anatomy and Physiology, US History.

SAT I and II may be taken again in the senior year.

Ms Whalley has met with Juniors to describe the registration process,
detail if and when to take the tests, and hand out registration materials.

The deadline for registration for the May 1st test is March 26th. The
deadline for registration for the June 5th test is April 29.  If you have
questions about when to take tests, please do not hesitate to call the
Guidance Office.
Financial assistance for families in need of support is available from the
SAT company by talking with your childıs counselor.

Shadowing

A big thank you to....
Acme Computer
B & M Printing
Competitive Edge

....for providing shadowing opportunities for our students.  This has proven
to be a great way for students to experience the workplace, learn what the
pros and cons are of their areas of interest are, and develop realistic
goals for the future.  If you have a workplace that could support a
shadowing day for an student from LHS, please contact the Guidance Office at
582-4119.

Host a German Student and expand your world....

A family is needed to host a German exchange student next year.  The
exchange program is overseen by the U.S. Congress-German Bundestag program,
a group that has sent us wonderful students in the past. The student will be
supported by a full 100% scholarship from the Bundestag.
Each student we have cared for in the past has been mature, responsible,
hard working and, in general, a terrific ambassador of their people.
If your family is interested, please let Ms Whalley know or you may email
syls@massed.net for more information.

Paris!

Twelve students from French II, III, IV -V will be visiting France during
April vacation.  Accompanied by chaperones, theyıll  be

                      Bon Voyage!

Italy!

Chapel, and the archeological work at the site of Pompeii.

What should I find out about…

a college or university that I am considering?
Do you meet admissions requirements?
Is the school accredited; has an independent agency approved the schoolıs
policies and courses?
Does the school offer a quality education at a reasonable price?  Do they
offer career counseling?
What kinds of employment do graduates find?
Does the school offer the courses and type of program you want?
Is the school the kind of place where I can feel comfortable (e.g. size of
town or city, size of student body, residential accommodations, quality of
food)?
Do most students earn a bachelorıs degree in four years?
Does the school offer services I need and the activities I am interested in?
What measures are taken to ensure the safety of the student?
What is the schoolıs dropout rate?  Why do students drop-out or transfer?

Self Defense
       (for Women Only)

April 5th and April 16th self defense classes will be offered to junior and
senior females.
"Model Mugging" is a well known program that teaches people
how to avoid a physical attack, and will train students how to respond if
they do face a threatening situation.
The focus will be on empowerment and the many techniques girls can use if
they need to defend themselves.  The class will run from 8:00 am to 12:00
pm.
Class size is limited to twenty.  Students should see
Ms Whalley for permission slips.  No student will be able to participate
without parental permission.

The Post Secondary
Planning Handbook

In March, all junior families will be receiving by mail a guidance
publication entitled Information for Post-Secondary Planning. This handbook
was developed to help juniors and their parents plan for post-secondary
education. The publication should be saved as it will bevaluable resource to
use over the course of the next year and a half. Topics which are covered
include the college search process, the Guidance Resource Center, college
entrance exams, the transcript package, the college application process,
financial aid, second semester issues, and additional post-secondary
options.

Information is now on hand about the full tuition scholarships available for
students planning to become teachers.  See your childıs counselor for
details.

Anna Maria College

will be hosting an open house for students planning a
career in music.  It will be on Sunday, March 21, at 1:00 p.m. in Miriam
Hall, the Music Building.  Call the school for more details (508) 849-3360.

10th grade and Tech Prep

On March 16th, twenty five sophomores attended a career day at Mt.
Wachusett Community College. Each student was introduced to three career
paths, given a tour of the campus and served lunch. A few career paths
explored  were Environmental Science, Automotive, Broadcasting, Business
Administration, Computer Graphics, Criminal Justice,  and Early Childhood
Education. The day was a great success.
Any tenth grade student interested in the Tech Prep Program for next year
should see Mr. Hicks. Tech Prep gives you credit in
college for taking high school classes that have been designed to match
those at participating colleges.

Parents of High School Girls...

Sometimes itıs good to know you are not alone!
A four-week confidential support group will begin meeting each Wednesday in
May at 3:00.  Please call Ms Whalley in the Guidance office if you would like
